It's alive! Well, virtually alive anyways

The first part of our project is to create a virtual Hadoop cluster using Amazon's EC2 computing cloud. This requires first setting up access to EC2. And, with the exhiliration of taking the first step of a long journey, we present our proof:

It's not much, but it is a server running on Amazon's cloud and ready to serve Hadoop programs. Or, it would be, if we had used the Hadoop image or installed Hadoop, which we didn't - that's next week.
We got it running following a mish-mash of several walk-throughs. Much more fun than actually sitting down and wading through the official documentation. I'll post more on the process next week.
